The pictures from our visit to a house where the Gutter Helmet protection system was installed turned out pretty good. You can expect to see the rest of them in our next update. The image on the left shows an end cap, the aluminum bracket that is screwed to the gutters on which each 5 foot section of Gutter Helmet is attached, and the relatively small area where the water rolls into the gutter.
This product, which has been designed to work because of the surface adhesion properties of water. It is only installed by approved contractors. The contractors will level and adjust your existing gutters if needed, and they will clean them out "for the last time" as part of the contract.
The homeowners that we visited had Gutter Helmet installed about 3 years ago, mostly because they were getting moisture in a small area of their basement after heavy rains. It was apparently due to leaf clogged gutters overflowing which allowed water to build up against the house in certain areas. Their basement has remained dry, and their gutters have since never needed to be cleaned. They are now very happy with their decision, and several of their neighbors have chosen to have them installed on their homes as well.

When cleaning gutters, plug the top of the downspout with a rag first. This will prevent a mess from going down the drain.
• Pick the bucket. Scoop up the heaped debris with a small plastic sand shovel or garden trowel and toss it into a bucket. Ladling the debris over the gutter's edge can soil the siding.
• De-clutter the gutter. Speed up cleanup by making a scraper from a piece of scrap hardboard or plastic. Cut it to the exact width of the gutter to push debris and silt into easy-to-remove piles.
• Attach a long rope to the handle of the bucket and lower loads of debris to the ground so you have both hands free for going down the ladder.
• Metal ladder hooks for paint buckets are also a convenient way to hold the bucket near the job site; or make a hook by bending a piece of heavy coat hanger wire into an S-shape.
• If pine needles are the source of a gutter clog, don't count on screens to help. The needles can get through the mesh but your fingers can't, making for a time-consuming cleanup.
• Blocked downspout? Instead of hassling with a ladder, use a plumber's snake, working from the bottom up. Feed in some coil, turn the handle until the coil moves easily, then feed in some more. Repeat until the blockage is removed.
• Water power. A blast from a garden hose can loosen tough clogs from a downspout. Just enlist a helper to feed the hose up to you.

My roof is very steep. Just how much rain can a Gutter Helmet system handle? The angle of a roof is called pitch. Gutter Helmet has engineered a variety of installation techniques to work on any pitch roof, from flat to almost vertical. In the early 1960's, MIT alumnus Bob Demartini began development of a meshless cover for roof gutters. After almost twenty years of product development and testing, Mr. Demartini applied for the first of several U.S. patents he would acquire.
